tattOO!..

Q. what kind of tattoo should i get?

Answer
one that you can wake up to daily and say damnn that is so awesome i love it today as much as when i got it.

i don't know you from adam so i can't suggest more than the most basic of designs

name, initials, nickname
flowers
birds
butterflies
hearts
stars
mushroom
frog
lizard
fairy
vine or henna design on foot
est (year of birth)
c'est la vie
or other fave saying

What other design should I add to this initial tattoo?

Brittany

I want to get something similar to this tattoo: http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff109/bandry13/DSC00839_large.jpg

I want to get that on the front of my shoulder but the only thing is I just want a letter "B" and the butterfly. I think it will look too plain. Should I add some color or some stars with it or something?

Answer
None.

Tattoo Artist Help Please?

Q. I want to get a small tattoo on my foot, but I have a few questions about it.

1. I have heard foot tattoos can smudge-is this true and how much?
2. What are the chances of the tattoo getting smudged or anything?-is this during the healing process or forever?
3. How long is the healing process?
4. How long will the tattoo take to do-it will be like 1 in wide and 3 in long
5. Does it hurt-alot?
6. Do you recommend it on the foot why or why not?
7. I have heard you can't wear shoes or socks during the healing process-is this true? What happens if you do?
8. Will I scar from the tattoo needle? I have very sensitive skin and scar from everything
9. Will it need to be touched up in the future-how often?
10. Will it fade at all?
11. Any other tattoo advice would be greatly appreciated!!! This will be my first tattoo and I plan on getting it around next September

Answer
Smudge? Tattoos anywhere on the body lose their sharpness, especially very small tattoos. Detail will be lost. For instance, good tattoo artists won't do small text because it will run together into a blurb. you can't help that, it's your body's natural aging process. Otherwise, the tattoo can 'blow out' where the lines can look like they've strayed from the original design. Usually a result of a very heavy handed artist.
A small tattoo of that size, probably an hour, your feet do hurt because of the bones and nerves in that area. Not a lot of skin and fat = pain. Typical healing time is about three weeks (for the initial process, complete healing time can be up to two months on a foot, which is why swimming and sunning are on the no no list for that long, then wearing sunscreen, while the top layer of skin regrows after peeling), though foot tattoos tend to hurt for longer during the healing process because the artist is putting an open wound on you, you don't realize how often you use a limb until you have something painful on it. As long as you stay to the upper side of the foot, you should be ok location wise, your foot regrows skin at a faster rate than other spots of the body because of the wear and tear it sees. So getting it lower where callouses are can be horrible for tattoos fading quickly or ink not sticking well.
Inevitably you're going to wear something on your feet. If you can schedule the tattoo before a weekend where you can leave it mostly uncovered for the first few days, it'd be great. You can wear cotton or a breathable sock, you want the ink to get air to heal. Shoes, try to keep them loose and kick em off when you can. If worst comes to worst, the sock might stick to the tattoo, if it doesn't come off easily after you apply water to gently remove it, you might need minor touch ups.

A tattoo is a scar. In a worst case scenario, you might end up with a keloid type scar. They're common around piercings but if you've ever had anything like them before, you might want to really think about the tattoo. Otherwise, the tattoo won't scar beyond where the ink is applied unless you get an infection.
With today's inks and applications, most tattoos can go years without a touch up, but your feet might need them a bit more often if you're a fan of flip flops or similar shoes where the tattoo is going to see a lot of sun, or if you like cramming your feet in heels or other tight fitting shoes, they can effect how often you're going to get a touch up. Tattoos do fade. It's inevitable. It's up to your aftercare that's going to effect it and how often you'd need touch ups to refresh it. Lots of sun or abrasive shoes can certainly do damage to a tattoo.

You've left yourself plenty of time to plan, so be sure to pick out an artist you're comfortable with and ask them for aftercare advice. A lot of shops put up aftercare on their websites now so people can be prepared with the right lotions and such before they get their tattoo (I can't recall how many times I've had to run out after getting a tattoo cause I forgot to plan ahead of time). Some have different tips and tricks to make things easier for you and that can give you the time before the tattoo to pick up anything that can be beneficial to having at home before you get inked (like an ice pack if it gets too sore).

Otherwise, eat right before you go in to get your tattoo, drink something sugary, fuel helps your body tolerate the new wound Be sure to ask your artist what their aftercare is, they should be able to give you concise washing directions (typically 2-3 times a day with a mild soap, pat dry with a clean paper towel, apply thin layers of lotion, something scent free and dye free like lubriderm, etc) and other info so if you do need a touch up, they can rest assured you didn't try some off the wall healing process either. :) Have fun and happy holidays to you!

Answer
I have one birthmark on my left shoulder blade. It's hardly noticeable.
I have ten tattoos.
A heart symbol that I designed on the back of my neck.
The Hebrew meaning of my name in Japanese below that(confirmed by my uncle who studied Japanese at Purdue U)
A Celtic cross between my shoulder blades(previously a gekko-really good cover up work!)
A butterfly on my left tata that has to be touched up
A tramp stamp of a blue butterfly in a "tribal" symbol
A butterfly on my left @$$ cheek
Two cherries on their stems with a leaf surrounded by the words "thick, juicy, sexy" on the front of my cooter
Yes. On the front of my cooter.
A butterfly that I designed on my left calf that has my fiance's initials hidden in the upper wings.
A treasure chest representative of the meaning of my daughter's name and a Celtic flame representative of the meaning of my son's name on my right calf.

*breathes heavily*
I'm copy/pasting that info into my notepad in case something similar to this is asked again.

Help design my own tattoo with 3 initials for my hubby and sons. Where to look online?

SSilva

Answer
This is a tattoo that you won't be able to find examples of online. This is a concept for a tattoo that you will have to come up with either on your own or you'll have to go to a shop and pay an artist to help you come up with an idea. I'm sorry.

Its really popular to get a butterfly with the initials you want to have hidden within the wings.

Dear R&S, do you have any tattoos? Do they hold any spiritual or personal significance?

crapbag

Also, please feel free to describe them! I like tattoos and I like hearing/reading descriptions of them.

Answer
I have a red/blue/green butterfly in flight on my right shoulder blade which I got when I was 16. My dad jokingly promised me a tattoo (on my a-s-s!) for my 16th birthday when I was 14 and I never forgot that. My parents were kinda against it. But I made them mad till I got it. And my mother wanted to come and see the design cuz she thought I would get something obscene or silly. But eventually it was the butterfly which signified freedom, after my 10th grade..

On my 18th birthday, I wanted another one and I got a blue bass guitar on my left hip with the words 'music is my life'. And the day I went to check for it that is my birthday, the guy I wanted to tattoo me was not there, and on the spot my mum who wasn't really a tattoo person decided to get a lady bird on her ring finger because she is allergic to metals and cant wear any jewelry.

Then when my sister turned 16 it was her turn, she got 3 shaded stars on the wrist and a custom design which if you looked at closely, you would see all the initials of every member of our family (this design was copied by another girl who saw it on facebook and she actually had the nerve to put it up! Our family initials!) Simultaneously my mother got another one on her hand/wrist, a rosary.

All this time we would trouble my dad to get a tattoo too. But he was never interested. Suddenly one day he put up pictures of himself with two tattoos on his calves on facebook and tagged us in them. He got it in Mexico (He works on a cruise line where as my family is from India). He a cross with a creeper and a flower wound around it, descending from heaven with the sun rays and clouds and also a few doves complete with family initials again that signifies heaven. And the other one is like the grim reaper with a machete that signifies hell..

And this is my dads quote..

Its funny how life is First you impress some one you want to spend your whole life with..(Len)
and then comes a time when you want to impress your Kids just to hear them say "My Dad is Cool"
So 5 hours of pain and encouragement from 6 beers through the saga....These Tattoos are for Roxanne and Sheehan.
Done in Cozumel Mexico after sleeping at 5 am and waking up at 9 only to do this as it was my only chance since
on the future ports no chance for this.....
And for all of you who think I am crazy....You should meet Roxanne & Sheehan.and you will see it was worth it...
If they could persuade Helen to do it.I could do it....Just to tell you how much I love you I tried to make it
bigger than life so you decide did I do good and Am I cool or What????
Tatoo is dedicated to all the family at home the initials hope you can see them......
Tatoo is still in the healing process so will look better sooon...

Now we are thinking of getting a tattoo all together as my dad is back home for a while..
Sorry for typing so much! But you really seemed interested!

my boyfriend/fiance want to get tattoos that fit together. I am at a loss to try and design cool tattoos! HELP?

I designed my first tattoo with his initials as the basis for a butterfly. This tattoo will be his first. I want a small/medium size tattoo and somewhere i can hide it. He doesn't care about size. We both want a symbolic tattoo that represents something great for both of us together and fits as a matching set i guess

Answer
If you really want to do it - and please don't be offended by my answer I only want to help -I would do something that is symbolic to the both of you but... if it happens that you break up, that there is another symbolic meaning behind it.

Maybe if he has the same initials as family of yours that means a lot to you. You could have a double meaning to any tattoo so if someone asks you, if you ever break up, what it means you won't have to avoid the answer. Just say "oh yeah, it's a coincidence." Remember though that initials are not a good idea, a double-meaning is the best way to go.

All the best of luck!

What are some unique tattoo ideas?

Caitlin

My friend is getting a tattoo soon and we're trying to think of ideas. She wants it too be a small tattoo it can be a short phrase or small picture to go on her hip. And it has to be something unique not like a butterfly or flower or stars. Pictures would help greatly.

Answer
If it doesnt come from her heart, and it doesnt mean something to HER, it wont be worth it. She needs to design it herself.

Example: Mine is a little heart with "smack" written in it. ( s.m.a.c.k.= initials of my family members)
My other one is on my foot and it says " Take the road less traveled by" because it was a very important poem for me when I was growing up.
tatoos are there forever! If they dont mean something to the individual, they may not like them later.

Going to continue to cover my back with tats...is my idea a common one?

I already have a large butterfly, with my kids initials in the wings that is just below the middle of my back ( the body of the butterfly goes down my spine). I also have a howling wolf with a setting moon on my right shoulder. I was thinking of flowers trailing down from my left shoulder to my right hip...is this common? Because I want something unique....

Answer
Tattoos themselves are unique by each person. It doesn't matter if the idea is common or seen as unoriginal. You make it unique because of the special meaning that it holds with you. Don't worry about if anyone else has the same basic design, your kids and memories make it special. Have an artist you trust and like draw up exactly what you want to tie it all together.

can anyone that can draw pls sketch a design for my tattoo please?

tonnette

i want to get a tattoo for my daughter because i have one for my son. i want it on my lower back. i want her first initial in the middle, which is an A, and cherry blossoms (because she was born in japan) extending from each side of her initial. im not sure if i want the cherry blossoms on a branch or not, but whatever looks good i guess. theres one problem. on the lower right side of my back, i have a small, light-green tattoo of a butterfly. its about 1 1/2-2 in. wide and about 1 in. in height. i want to cover it up with this tattoo. whatever help i can get would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
tattoo shop and have them draw it for you! The original artist will do the best tattoo rendition of the design.

Good luck
