I'm not getting the design of the butterfly just the way they are positioned and the way the shadow looks.

Can someone give me some advice?
cleoastro
I am getting a tattoo of the roman numerals MMIX. I want a little advice though. I want a small tattoo, but I was wondering if I should add something more to it. This tattoo is a HUGE deal to me because I finally got a college degree after only having a G.E.D. also I am the first in my family to go to college. I was wondering what I could add to it, and I have thought of a butterfly, but I wanted someone else's opinion, thanks!
I am a 32 year old female

There's different ways to do this:

How you do the letters could be blocky, light and airy, with shading, 3D, made to look like stone or wood, etc. You can use colors solid or with fading. I would explore different lettering techniques before committing.

etc.
Also, you could put a flower or a bird or something else that is meaningful to you with it.
Take any and all images and ideas with you to your tattoo artist, and have him/her help you work out a custom design. Remember that letters should not be smaller than 1/2" with good skin space around to hold up well over time and not blur.
luck~
