I am fixing to turn 18 and I am contemplating getting a tattoo. But I want it to mean something. I want it to represent what I have been through in my life (self-injury, rape, bulimia). Also I need to know where would be the best place to put it since I am going into Air Force ROTC. What do you think?
Its to represent my moving past and being stronger.

Answer
I think that you need to think about what Tod said.
You do not want to carry into the future, the bad things that you have had happen to you, by representing them in a tattoo image.
What happened to you and how you handled it is not what you would have chosen if it had been different. Don't let the bad stuff win.
Don't let the rape dominate your life, and don't let your life revolve around it, and the things that you did to cope.
You do not win this way. You need to not carry it into the future to be free.
How do you do this? Yes, you went through a lot. So don't put yourself through more of the same! To be free, you need to find an image that is pure and free from all of that. Something that will make you smile everytime that you look at it. Something to confirm that your life is yours and that you are in charge. Something that you would have chosen if you had not gone through what you have gone through. That is how you progress into the future. That is how you have more years of happiness, and spite the bad stuff.
Give yourself a wonderful gift! Something beautiful, and strong, and unique.
Here's something powerful:
Lilith:

Durga:

aphrodite:

Now you may need something small for now, so:
I love this 'Lion raindrop' and all that it symbolizes:

and this would translate well into a tattoo:

Otherwise, there is the butterfly, the flower, the bird, .. all strong and beautiful symbols that you can personalize.
As far as placement, find out what you can and cannot do before you commit.
luck~

Could someone show me a photo of a good Japanese woodblock style tattoo?

Q. I love that type of artwork and I'm looking to get a tattoo in that style. I'd really like an answer from someone who has one so I can hear how you feel about having it and your experience with finding a good artist. I've been searching for an artist, I'm in the NJ/NY area.

Answer
This is a tattoo that I gave to my daughter for her birthday this year. I really enjoyed doing the tattoo and my daughter couldn't be any more proud of it. She researched for a year and played with the designs she liked until she came to this. The butterfly is the woodblock design, the cherry blossoms and kanji were added to give the piece more volume and interest.

The best way to find a good artist is to go visit several shops, look at the photos of the artist's work, talk to the artists, and possibly talk to previous clients to get a good idea of the overall experiences in that particular place.
