Butterflies would be cool - not only are the flying & free, they represent a metamorphosis - and if you're getting it to symbolise ending addiction (well done, btw), that's definitely a metamorphosis. Butterflies can also look superpretty - whether you do them tribal-style, very simple, really colourful, etc. Or, if that's too girly for you, you could maybe get something like dragonflies, or even a really cool, dusty-looking moth.
Other stuff that says 'set free' to me would be cats (they're v free & independent), fish swimming along - maybe koi or a pretty goldfish or something, or even just a simple star or something. Ultimately, though, you need to pick something that's meaningful to you not anyone else. Sit down, put on some chill music, & brainstorm a bit! Oh, & don't underestimate the tattoo artist - if he or she is good & eperienced, they'll be able to give you lots of ideas. Good luck!
