Q. ok im towards the end at the part where robert nevel and anna and ethan are in the pelxiglss, cage thingy ans the big strong infected guy is trying to break through, nevel is pleading with him to let him save them, then the sound stops and you hear "daddy look at the butterfly" and he looks at anna's tatoo... what was this symbolizing? what did he realize?
also about five minutes before this why did he drop the gun after he shot the first one? then he had to grab the gun off the end table, why didnt he just take the first gun wiht him? i think it was out of bulets, am i right???
ok i rewinded it and rewatched it and i see that the shattering glass is shaped like a butterfly, and i read on wikipedia and it had something about the alpha male identifying the cured by her butterfly tatoo, but that was from the book... was anna the alpha female? or do i have it all wrong?

First there's the scene where his daughter says "daddy look at the butterfly"
and another really quick one of a picture of a butterfly somewhere in the beginning.
Then when they are being attacked, when the creature is trying to break the glass, the shattering glass is shaped like a butterfly as well, watch back if you can.
All of these comes to Anna's tattoo, which he then realizes is a sign.

1 - a roadmap in the movie marking events or things to notice: the God Still Loves Us posters, his daughter in the car, the captured darkseekers tattoo, it with him when he promises Sam to talk to the mannequin, on teh neck of the other woman, in the plexiglass when broken by the alpha seeker. it is through all of these connections that he realizes in the end of what he has to do.
2- it is a religious implication stating that we are never alone and God is always there even when the last person. it marks that he is still loved, that these mutated humans can still love, that his daughter is telling him to watch the butterflys, and inevitably that there IS a heaven despite his previous beliefs that there was no God. when he realizes this, he is able to sacrifice himself to save the cure, and ensuring " his legend "
