Tattoo artist messed up my girlfriends tattoo?

Jack Johns

My girlfriend got a tattoo for her birthday. We've been talking about it forever, and she finally got it done yesterday. I helped her pick it out, and She wanted it about the size of a 1/2 dollar. She showed it to me yesterday, and it's about the size of her shoulder blade, and looks like shit.... The artist kept wanting to go larger and larger, and she said, no. So I guess that's why it's as big as her shoulder blade. The right side is done ok, but the right is sloppy, all the circles and ovals are not even close to matching the left side, and is slanting down. you can tell the artist free hand it, because it did not look like the stencil he drew on her. First off i feel really bad, because I knew she wanted it to be perfect, and got it messed up by some ameauture guy that charged her 100$ for 15 mins.

Ok I told her I like it, just not how it's done... It's a cool butterfly, but they seriously fucked it up.
We're are really close, and it's killing me not to see her happy over something that's gonna be permanent. I offered to go with her it to get fixed by a good shop. She was really sad, and think it was an ok........
BTW anyone know a good shop in Arizona, or California?
I meant to say the right is ok, and the left is screwed up.

Answer
O.K., this is what needs to be done:
1st and foremost, she must do excellent and current aftercare so that it heals as good as it can without problems.
2nd, put all judgment on hold until it is completely and totally healed (2 - 4 wks or more). It is going to look all kinds of weird while healing, so don't pay attention to that, just in doing a good job of aftercare.
3rd, during this time, do your research and find a reputable and skilled tattoo artist that has some years experience to consult.
4th, print up a clear copy of the image that you wanted, to take as reference.
5th, view this as a potential 'happy accident', = that she will end up with a much better and more unique tattoo because of the journey it takes to get there.
6th, realize, that most people think that the tattoo image should be way too small for their 1st tattoo, and it is typical that what is chosen should be at least 2Xs bigger. This is so that it will hold up well over time, and the lines will not be too close together, and that it will fit with anatomy and skin space. You must realize that a 3D body is very very different from a 2D piece of paper, and tattooing is very different from drawing.
So, maybe the size is correct, but the image needs to be reworked by a skilled and talented tattoo artist.

This happened to me, and after the initial panic and disappointment, I ended up with a dynamite tattoo that I never would have had if the 1st tattooist hadn't screwed up!

Here's a great video on current aftercare methods. I prefer Lubriderm unscented no dye lotion, but Curel is good too:

I wish that you posted a picture of it after it was 1st completed, I may be able to give suggestions, I am experienced, and artistic. You can send me an email through here, if you think that it may help.

As far as finding a good shop in those 2 states, there are many many many to choose from. You could check this site for 'favorite artists' and ask Karen Hudson for a recommendation in a specific area:

Breathe! Relax! Be optimistic, it will turn out great! (it just may take a while and cost more money!)

luck~

Answer
You know that you don't have to fit the entire question just in that first part right? You've shortened this so much that no one knows for sure what you're talking about.

Do you think the design of a tattoo is too flat in 2D? If the design of the tattoo was improved to be 3D, would you be more interested in it?

Even written like that it's really hard to understand what you're talking about. Are you looking to get a more realistic tattoo? Like.. say.. a butterfly that actually looks somewhat real? If that's the case you could ask the artist to add shadowing to make it look like it's actually off your skin. Is that what you mean?

Hopefully I helped some.. sorry if i'm completely off here.
