It all depends on the tattoo itself. Many tattoos are based on symbols. Try doing a search for symbols and their meanings instead of "tattoo meanings." Some tattoos mean something to one person while the same image might mean something else to another person. What's important is what it means to you. And it doesn't HAVE TO mean anything, sometimes you just like the design or the image. My wings have a LOT of different meanings to me. Freedom, angels, Isis, a lot went into the decision to cover my whole back with a pair of wings. I have a butterfly in my favorite colors just because I like butterflies and it's cute. Different flowers represent different birth months or seasons. So do insects and birds. Trees can mean a lot of different things, depending on the tree. Stars, moons, clovers, leaves, animals, seasons, playing cards, words, shapes, many things symbolize other things. One tattoo can have a few symbols mixed together in it to create a meaning perfect for you.
You can also ask the best tattoo shop in town. Often times they have books on symbols at the shop which they use for reference. Check out the local library, get the librarian to help you find non-fiction books about symbols and their meanings. You can also look into dreams and their meanings to get good ideas for a tattoo.
In the end, it doesn't matter what a book says though. That tattoo is going to mean whatever you want it to mean based on the reasons you chose it. And you can tell a good tattoo artist what you want in a tattoo, things you like, what you want it to symbolize, and they can help point you in the right direction or draw one up for you that will be custom design, then no one else will have the exact same design as you.
