when other civilizations think of it is a beautiful art form? Is it because so many people get pointless crap like butterflies and tribal bands that don't mean anything to them tattooed by crappy tattoo artists? or something else?

Answer
Because we live in a society that has always had some messed up attitude about people/things/ races diffrent than the norm. The older the average american gets, usually the more "stuck up" they get. I haven't ever really understood it either. Not to mention too many people in this country believe that tat's = prison, or gangs, or whatever the news can make their simplistic minds think. Its horrible. And yes, its also sad that people take this art form and try to be like everyone else, making the same freakin tat over and over, never taking the time to personalize it . They're in it for the fad of it.

Is it true that tatoos and piercings indicate that the person has done something "bad" that they are proud of?

So if a chick decides she needs a tattoo and piercings, it's because she is now a druggy or a slut? Or both.?

Answer
Not normally.

Some gang cultures promote getting certain tattoo's to indicate that they have killed a certain number of people or achieved a certain rank within the social structure of the gang.

Mostly, people get them because they think they look good. I have quite a few piercings and some rather 'girly' tattoos (butterfly, cat, frog, triquetra, my name) and I got them because they're pretty! They lift my mood and are a constant reminder of the beauty of nature, of my identity and spirituality.

EDIT RE: Dominique
People who return to education should be proud of what they're doing, and people should respect them for their actions. Sort yourself (and your attitude) out.
